Ramah Israel Campus

TRY is based at the Ramah Israel campus, which is located in the Israel Goldstein Youth Village in the San Simon neighborhood of Jerusalem. The pastoral Hava is a lush, tree-lined campus that is also home to an Israeli boarding school and a high school for French students and includes athletic facilities, a library, infirmary, an indoor pool and a kosher cafeteria. The Hava is completely surrounded by a perimeter security fence, and guards are stationed at any gates where vehicles or people come in or out. One of the main advantages of our base is that in addition to TRY participants, there will be high school students from Israel and around the world - primarily from Russia, Yugoslavia, Ethiopia, and France - living and studying at the "Chava". The opportunity you will have to interact with students from various backgrounds adds an exciting dimension to the TRY experience, and will undoubtedly give new meaning to the concept of "ingathering".

Living Together

Life at the Chava bears a strong similarity to dorm life in college, but in a smaller, more secure environment that works for high school students. Each dorm room is designed for three to four students, who also share a bathroom. The room at the Chava becomes ‘home’ for the next four months, and TRYers treat it as such, decorating the walls, and filling the communal fridge with treats from the nearby supermarket. The madrichim live in the dorms as well, and they become a regular part of the students’ lives, dispensing advice on everything from upcoming tiyulim and life in Israel to where to find the best burger. They plan group activities, help organize home hospitality for the students and act as live-in advisors who are always there for the students, 24/7. Students on TRY also join group va’adot, committees, to enhance their group experiences. Our student volunteers work on va’adot relating to tefillah, social life, parties, holidays and the TRY yearbook. There is even a student government va’ad that is elected to represent the group with the TRY administration.

Living in Jerusalem

The program itself takes full advantage of the students' presence in Israel's capital and the spiritual center of the Jewish world. TRY offers an endless array of enriching experiences and a variety of extra-curricular activities to further acquaint the participants with the complexity and fascination of the city.

Jerusalem may be a holy city to many, but it also becomes a temporary home for the TRY students during their four months on the program. This is the city they will explore and learn in their studies, as well as discover on their own, with their friends and madrichim in tow. The Chava is within easy access of downtown Jerusalem, the Emek Refaim shopping area in the German Colony neighborhood and the city’s Malcha Mall. Students have a certain amount of free time each week to go out, always within the parameters and restrictions set by the program’s staff. And when you get hungry, there’s a wide array of takeout and local supermarkets to satisfy any teenager.
